The uninitiated sees only one event at the start of a bobsled race-the massive pushing of the sled. But anyone who has ever learnt to push a sled knows that it is a series of actions, each building on the other— creating momentum and the spectacle so many like to witness.
Sure, a massive amount of energy is needed at the outset to get the 650 lbs sled moving, but once you have gotten over the initial inertia, since the goal is to get to maximum speed in as short a time as possible, you have to continue the process and Keep On Pushing.
And even as you head down the track, in a very real way, you are still pushing. You are pushing against the ice conditions, the weather condition, the twists and turns on the track and you are pushing the limits of your abilities. Your goal is always to improve on what you did previously.
This philosophy of Keep On Pushing is not just applicable to bobsledding; it is reflective of the success journey of life. It is the process of working through each step to arrive at the next one, with each step motivating and inspiring you to Keep On Pushing further along the journey. It is dynamic, ever changing, fluid process for transforming oneself as well transforming the people, organization and institutions around them.
Human beings, by extension, the institutions that they are a part of, are designed and built for continuous growth. You either grow or perish. As the late Bruce Lee so aptly said “The function and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of one's potential. “ Organizations have to adapt and adopt new technologies and systems to remain competitive and relevant in the market place.
Individuals need to grow continually, not just by learning and developing new skills but also learning how to apply their existing knowledge, skill set and experience to this new dynamic environment that you find yourself in; in order to create new opportunities for the future. In short Keep On Pushing clearly speaks to the idea of embracing change.
Keep On Pushing also speaks to the idea of persistence.
It is no secret that along your success journey, you will always encounter obstacles standing between you and your goals. You will either have to find a way to push those obstacles out of the way or find a way to push yourself over, around, under or through them. The ability to persist, to keep on pushing until the goal is achieved is often the one thing that separates the successful from the not so successful.
In the next few weeks, we will tackle each aspect of this philosophy. Keep On Pushing!
