Embrace Change as Growth: Turn Disruption Into Your Greatest Advantage
Have you ever noticed how your most defining moments often begin with unexpected change?
When I received the invitation to join Jamaica’s first Olympic bobsled team, I was faced with a decision that would completely alter the direction of my life. Leaving the familiar warmth of Jamaica for the icy unknown of winter sports wasn’t just a physical shift—it was a mindset reset. That moment taught me a lesson I carry with me to this day:
Change isn’t something that happens to you—it happens for you.
Why You Must Embrace Change as Growth
Our brains are wired for comfort. We cling to routine, predictability, and control. But if we never step beyond our comfort zone, we never grow. Change is uncomfortable—but it’s also the most direct path to transformation.
When our Jamaican bobsled team first faced the Olympic track, nothing felt familiar. We had to adapt quickly—every challenge, every crash, every setback became part of our evolution. If we had resisted change, we would’ve missed our shot at Olympic history.
The same is true for you. Whether you’re facing a professional pivot, a personal challenge, or an unexpected shift, you have two choices: resist it or rise because of it.
The Hidden Gift in Disruption
Change often arrives wrapped in discomfort. It can look like a job loss, a health scare, a move, or a broken relationship. But within every disruption lies an invitation to grow.
Thriving through change has less to do with your circumstances—and everything to do with your mindset. When you embrace change as growth, you activate your resilience, sharpen your vision, and become more adaptable to whatever comes next.
How to Embrace Change as Growth
1. Reframe Your Self-Talk
Instead of saying, “I have to deal with this,” ask:
💬 “What is this preparing me for?”
That small shift can lead to powerful insight.
2. Keep a Resilience Record
Document past changes you’ve navigated well. This builds confidence and becomes proof of your strength.

3. Find the Growth Opportunity
Every change carries the potential to develop a new strength. Ask yourself:
💡 “What perspective can I gain from this?”
4. Build Your Change Muscle
Practice small acts of discomfort daily—like initiating a tough conversation or trying something new. (See: Why Failure Builds Resilience)
5. Surround Yourself with Growth-Minded People
When you’re around those who see change as opportunity, it becomes easier to do the same.
Growth Lives Outside Your Comfort Zone
From Olympic athlete to global keynote speaker, my journey has been shaped by change. Every turning point, every challenge, every evolution—was fueled by the choice to embrace change as growth.
So today, here’s your challenge:
👉 Identify one change you’ve been avoiding.
Ask yourself: “What might I gain from this?”
Then take one step toward it—with courage, not fear.
